Essa foto foi tirada na tarde de 3 de maio de 2009. Minha cara diz tudo. Foi um encontro com Ike Willis, que por alguns anos foi a voz de Frank Zappa em alguns dos seus mais brilhantes álbuns - como Joe's Garage, Thing-Fish, Tinseltown Rebellion e You Are What You Is.

Nesse dia Ike veio a São Paulo cantar com a banda cover brasileira The Central Scrutinizer, aliás uma das melhores do mundo. Pouco antes do show começar fui até os bastidores e pedi ao vocalista/guitarrista Mano Bapp que me desse a chance de tirar uma foto com esse cantor extraordinário. Mano na mesma hora chamou o Ike, explicou que eu era uma espécie de divulgador da obra do Zappa no Brasil. E o Ike posou comigo.

Ontem, 17 de maio, esse grande artista faleceu, vítima do mesmo mal que matou FZ: câncer de próstata. Ele tinha 70 anos. Não era só um cantor. Demonstrou ser um ator de muitos recursos interpretando o trágico Joe, de Joe's Garage. Foi também o personagem-título de Thing-Fish, que falava com um linguajar que resumia toda a visão preconceituosa sobre negros, e fez isso soar engraçado e ao mesmo tempo com um sabor de vingança.

This photo was taken on the afternoon of May 3, 2009. My face says it all. It was a meeting with Ike Willis, who for several years was the voice of Frank Zappa on some of his most brilliant albums – such as Joe's Garage, Thing-Fish, Tinseltown Rebellion, and You Are What You Is.

That day Ike came to São Paulo to sing with the Brazilian cover band The Central Scrutinizer, incidentally one of the best in the world. Shortly before the show started, I went backstage and asked the vocalist/guitarist Mano Bapp to give me the chance to take a picture with this extraordinary singer. Mano immediately called Ike over, explained that I was a kind of promoter of Zappa's work in Brazil. And Ike posed with me.

Yesterday, May 17th, this great artist passed away, a victim of the same illness that killed FZ: prostate cancer. He was 70 years old. He wasn't just a singer. He proved to be a very resourceful actor playing the tragic Joe in Joe's Garage. He was also the title character in Thing-Fish, who spoke with language that encapsulated the prejudiced views about Black people, and made it sound funny while also having a vengeful flavor.
